ゴリラは目を合わせる
ニホンザルは目を見ると威嚇と捉えられるそうですが、ゴリラはむしろ逆で、ものすごく良く見つめ合うのだとか。ゴリラは言葉を持たずとも、視線を用いてコミュニケーションをしている。交わされる視線のひとつひとつから繰り出される情報の密度は、言葉をもった人間よりも濃いのかもしれません。
言葉を持たないゴリラの未来観
『サピエンス全史』の著者、ハラリ氏によると、人間は、およそ７万年前に言葉を持ったことで、夢や希望を語ることができるようになったと言われています。言葉は「見えないものを見せる力」をもっている。でも、それは同時に、「きっといい暮らしがまっている」という、幻想や詐欺も可能にしたとも触れられています。
言葉を持たないゴリラは、未来を期待することもなければ、絶滅するかもしれないという未来を悲観することもありません。ただ、今を生きて、目の前の者と真剣に視線を交わしあっています。
私たちが「さぁゴリラになろう！」なんて言っても、それはムリな話ですが、言葉をもつ人間だからこそ、交わしあう言葉の密度を変えることなら、きっとできるはずです。

Gorillas make eye contact
While Japanese macaques(Nihon-saru) interpret eye contact as a threat, gorillas do the opposite—they stare at each other intensely.
Even without language, gorillas communicate through their gaze. The density of information conveyed in each exchanged glance might be richer than that of humans who possess language.
The Future Outlook of Gorillas Without Language
According to Yuval Noah Harari, author of Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, it is said that humans, having acquired language some 70,000 years ago, gained the ability to speak of dreams and hopes. Language possesses the power to make the invisible visible. Yet, it is also noted that this simultaneously enabled illusions and deceit, such as the notion that “a better life surely awaits”.
Gorillas, lacking language, neither anticipate the future nor despair over the possibility of extinction. They simply live in the present, exchanging earnest gazes with those before them.
While we cannot simply declare, ‘Right then, let’s become gorillas!’, precisely because we are humans endowed with language, we should be able to alter the density of the words we exchange.
